Guided Author

What’s included in the Guided Author program?

You get everything you need to confidently write, publish, and market your book. The entire program includes comprehensive support at every stage, from initial strategy to post-launch promotion.

Is editing included? How does the editing work?

Yes, editing is included. Once you complete your rough draft, it will go through a complete structural edit by a member of the Executive Editing team, all with over 15 years of experience.

Our goal is to ensure your book is not bad before publishing. If necessary, we’ll point out where it needs work and guide you on how to fix it. Once we know your book is on the right track, the next step is to take it from good to great. Our editing approach is about making sure your book is of the highest quality, because our reputation is tied to it, just like yours.

Is publishing included? How does publishing work?

Yes, publishing is fully included. We take care of everything: interior layout, cover design, distribution, and more. The process we follow is the same as with our Scribe Professional authors, ensuring your book receives the same high standard of publishing quality.

Do I have to take 15 months, or can I go faster?

You can pay for the Guided Author service over 15 months, but you can publish in as little as 9 months, depending on how quickly you write and edit your manuscript. The only requirement is that the full payment must be made before we proceed with the final publishing stages.

American Legacy Publishing

Do I own all the rights to my book?

Do I own all the rights to my book?

Do I get all the profits from my book?

Yes. You retain 100% of the profits. All publishing accounts are created in your name, giving you full control and ownership over your royalties and content.

Who is the publisher?

We offer flexible publishing options under our own imprint or a custom one of your choice. You can publish under our house imprint or create your own publishing name—it’s entirely your decision.

How do royalties work?

While we don’t take any share of your profits, some standard platform costs apply. For eBooks, platforms like Amazon typically keep 30%, while you receive 70%. For paperbacks, Amazon takes about 40%, printing costs average around $3, and the rest goes to you. If you choose to publish a hardcover, we’ll walk you through the details before moving forward.

Why don’t you take royalties? Doesn’t that align our incentives?

Actually, it doesn’t. Our service-based model ensures our focus stays on your goals—not just book sales.

By charging a flat fee and allowing you to retain 100% of your rights and royalties, we prioritize helping you achieve outcomes like building authority, landing speaking engagements, or attracting clients. A royalty-based model shifts focus to maximizing sales volume, which may not align with your bigger vision.

Is This Self-Publishing?

Technically, yes—but not in the way you might think.

When most people ask this, what they’re really wondering is, “Will my book look self-published or unprofessional?” The answer: absolutely not. You’re hiring us to make sure your book is created and published to the highest professional standards.

Your book is published through a credible, established imprint (either ours or one you choose), with complete ownership and control in your hands. So, while you retain full rights like in self-publishing, the result is far from amateur.

In today’s world, many bestselling and influential books are produced outside of traditional publishing. Our model combines the best of both worlds—professional publishing standards with the freedom and control of ownership

Can you get my books into a bookstore?

Yes and no. This is a complicated answer, again because the publishing business is so weird.

Yes, we make your book available for order and sale in bookstores and retail outlets. All our books are put into the Ingram database, and can be ordered in every bookstore in the country.

No, we do not automatically put your book in bookstores. This is because bookstores carry very few books, reserving their limited space for established authors or books from publishers who are paying for shelf space.

You generally need to sell at least 25,000 copies before bookstores become interested in carrying your book. That’s the bad news. The good news is that being in bookstores doesn’t really matter anymore. A book sitting on a shelf doesn’t sell in most cases. In terms of buyer behavior, most people who shop at Barnes & Noble also shop on Amazon, so if they don’t see a book at Barnes & Noble, they’ll just go to Amazon. In other words, lack of bookstore distribution in and of itself doesn’t necessarily lose you very many sales.

The reality is, for almost all authors, being in a bookstore is purely about ego, and not about actual ROI. We don’t deny that going into a bookstore and seeing your book on the shelf is nice, but having a book in a bookstore does almost nothing in terms of sales or awareness. It is only a status object.

How much do you charge for copies? Will I be able to order personal copies at a discounted price?

We don’t charge you anything for copies. You get to buy copies at the print cost. For print on demand paperback, Kindle Direct Publishing and IngramSpark not only prints books for approximately $4 a copy when they’re ordered through Amazon, but they’ll sell the author these books at the same cost. At any time after the book is published, you can order copies in any quantities you’d like at this discounted price, direct from the printer (we don’t make money on copies).

If you are looking for a larger quantity of books (1,000 or more), we set you up with a commercial offset printer to handle this request. They can provide better prices at large quantities. We take no markup.

Who designs the book covers? Do I get to give feedback on that?

Your book cover and manuscript interior layout will be designed by world class designers, but you have full creative control.

Our Creative Director has done dozens of New York Times Best Sellers, as well as the other book cover designers we’ve worked with. Combined, they have worked on over 100 best sellers that have sold millions of copies. You are getting the very best in design, because having a great book cover is a key to establishing your book as credible and professional.

Before we start the design process, you’ll have a long conversation with the Creative Director to understand your vision for the cover (if you have any). We organize this information into a design brief and use it to create a series of initial cover designs, which you will review and give feedback on. Just like all parts of our process, you will have full, 100% approval of your cover.

Marketing Services with the American Legacy Publishers Publishing Package?

We will manage the logistics to run an Amazon Bestseller Campaign that focuses on maximizing early sales, reviews, and rankings, all to build the foundation of early credibility for your book’s long term success.

We will also support you in promoting the book to your connections by creating social media graphics for the book, crafting a book announcement email, gifting free copies to your friends and family, and creating a strategy for you to get the support of influencers who you know.

By the end of the first week of your book release, your book should have Amazon bestseller status, a burst of early sales, a baseline of reviews, awareness among your network, and you should have a plan for how to continue to leverage it going forward.

We do offer other add-on marketing packages as well.

Book Publishing Audiobook

How do I estimate the length of my audiobook?

To estimate your audiobook’s final runtime, divide your manuscript’s word count by 9,000. For example, a 50,000-word book (about 200 pages) would result in roughly 5.5 hours of audio.

How long does it take to produce an audiobook?

At American Legacy Publishers, we typically deliver a professionally produced, retail-ready audiobook within 2 to 3 months of signing your agreement.

What’s the typical recording time?

Professional narrators record at a 2:1 ratio—meaning 2 hours in the studio for every 1 hour of finished audio. First-time authors or narrators may take closer to a 3:1 ratio, depending on experience.

How should I prepare if I want to narrate my own audiobook?

Recording your own audiobook takes practice and stamina. Read your manuscript out loud regularly, restart sentences when you make mistakes, and consider using annotation tools to help with pacing and pronunciation.

While it’s meaningful to use your own voice, audiobook narration is a performance—not just reading aloud. If you’d prefer a polished result, American Legacy Publishers offers access to a network of over 1,000 professional narrators, and we’ll support you through every step—from voice selection to final distribution.

Marketing Publicity

Can You Help Me Reach Out to ______?

For the first four months, American Legacy Publishers focuses on building your credibility and authority with the media by presenting a wide range of publicity opportunities. After this initial period, we can begin targeted outreach to individual journalists and specific publications. This phased approach ensures your story is well-developed and your reputation is established—making you more appealing to major media outlets.

How Do You Measure the Success of Your Publicity Service?

We track success using several key metrics, including:

  • The number of publicity opportunities offered

  • The number of opportunities accepted or responded to

  • The number of published quotes or features

  • The Domain Authority of the media outlets

  • The monthly unique visitors of each publication

  • The relevance of each publication’s audience to your goals

What Kind of Results Can I Expect?

On average, our authors receive 4–8 media opportunities each month. Typically, 2–3 of those result in published coverage.

Please note that while we strive for great results, we cannot guarantee exact placements or timing of publication.

How Much Say Do I Have in Strategy and Messaging?

Your input is always welcome!

That said, with years of experience in media outreach, we’ve learned that building strong momentum through frequent, high-quality coverage is more impactful than landing a single “dream” placement early on. Our strategy is to establish you as a credible source first, which naturally attracts attention from high-profile outlets over time.

Why Choose American Legacy Publishers for Publicity?

We’ve worked with hundreds of authors aiming to boost their visibility, sell more books, drive web traffic, secure speaking engagements, and grow their business presence.
